This class explores art from multiple angles. The curriculum incorporates historical study, classical instruction, and hands-on experimentation. Each class is broken up into three parts:
Art Study: Students will be presented with a piece of art at the beginning of each class to expose them to famous artists and different styles and mediums. They will be given time to study and observe the artwork for a period of time, after which they will narrate what they observed, and discuss the piece with the class. Studying existing artwork spreads a feast of subject material before students, which offers a source of inspiration and encourages critical thinking skills as students challenge their brains to interpret content, pay attention, make predictions, and engage in thoughtful discussion.Â
Technique and teaching the elements of art: During this time young artists will be taught the elements of art including form, line, shape, space, and texture. This gives students the tools needed to master a variety of techniques and mediums, which will allow them to successfully create art that interests them.
Invention and exploration: For the majority of the class time, students will be provided opportunities to apply technique while inventing and exploring with different mediums. These opportunities are valuable in developing individual expression as an artist. Our goal is to inspire creativity, inventiveness, and authenticity by giving our young creators supplies and time to try new things.
We will rotate through different mediums such as watercolor, collage, mosaic, flower pressing, stamping, and handicrafts including beading, crocheting, embroidery, leather tooling, etc. Click here to see the calendar for the year.
We eventually hope to bring in guest artists from UCM and the surrounding community as we recognize the value in exposure to different art styles, mediums, and processes of professionals. Students will compile a portfolio throughout the term. At the end of each term, students will have the opportunity to showcase their work.
